Imagine, if you can, receiving a heartfelt letter from God, a personal note overflowing with His deep love for each of us. It's a heartwarming thought, isn't it? Well, here's the beautiful truth: God has already given us such a precious letter. It's not a physical card, but it's the living Word of God, the Bible. This letter is written especially for His beloved children, revealing the depth of His love. Taking time with His letter gives us a clearer vision and helps us understand the deeper places of our hearts.
The Bible, often called the holy scriptures, is a treasure of action-packed stories, life-giving wisdom, and beautiful awe-filled poetry. It has the power to bring us closer to the One who authored it, our Father God. As we embark on this new year, our hope as a church is that we grow deeper in our love for our Father by spending time with Him and His Word. Through His Word, we encounter Him, follow His guidance, and discover who we truly are.
In a world filled with countless distractions – from personal devices that know your personal preferences to social media and television to work, hobbies and decadent delights – making it crucial to protect the central place in our hearts. It's where we dedicate ourselves, where we ponder the significant questions of "Who is guiding my life? Who am I, where am I heading, and why am I here?”
The answers come as we journey with Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life. He not only defines our identity but also provides a sense of belonging in a kingdom not built by human hands. By surrendering to God, we receive all we need to navigate life.
The apostle Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament, shared with his young friend, Timothy, the incredible significance of the Scriptures. He affirmed, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT).
The Bible isn't just a book; it's a way to deepen our relationship with God, understand His nature, and connect with Him in our daily lives. He is here, right now, guiding our paths.
In moments of doubt and uncertainty, the Bible offers us a refuge. It is the source of truth, assuring us of God's enduring presence and His deep care for us. It dispels our doubts, reminding us of His unwavering presence.
In days gone by, listening to the Scriptures being read aloud was a common tradition. Hearing the Word allowed it to resonate deep within our hearts. In today's modern age, while reading the Bible in our own languages is a gift, the practice of listening to it remains powerful. Rediscovering the joy of hearing the Scriptures can lead to a deeper connection with God. As we listen, His words wash over us, nurturing our spirits.
Consider reading these passages out loud to yourself:
Deuteronomy 31:8 NIVUK: "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
John 14:18-27 NIVUK: Jesus promises, "I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you..." His words reassure us and bring peace.
Psalm 139:7-12 NIVUK reminds us that there is no place where God is not present, even in the darkest of moments.
Isaiah 43:1-3 NIVUK affirms God's redeeming love, promising to be with us in times of trial.
Isaiah 41:10 NIVUK reminds us not to fear, for God is with us and will uphold us.
In these passages, we hear God's words speaking directly to our hearts, assuring us of His presence and love. His voice, filled with love and hope, carries a powerful message: "You have nothing to fear, for I am here.”
Fear and love have distinct voices. Fear divides, accuses, and creates chaos. It points fingers and builds walls, demanding its way. In contrast, love unifies, heals, forgives, and breaks down walls, welcoming others with open arms. Love resonates with identity and belonging in Jesus, saying, "Welcome, we are glad you are here.”
Amidst the uncertainties that surround us, it's crucial to discern God's voice of love from the clamour of fear. This requires a deliberate effort to be still before the Lord, allowing His voice to guide us. It's not about reacting hastily but seeking His wisdom.
The voice of love will lead us to rest in His presence. We must avoid knee-jerk reactions dictated by fear and instead ask God, "What would You have me do?" This is the path to responding from a place of love and peace, guided by the Shepherd's voice.
Consider reading Psalm 4 in its entirety, and you will discover that God calls us to be still and trust in His countenance. He fills our hearts with gladness and surpasses the joy of worldly success. This is the promise of deep peace that resonates with our souls.
The Bible is filled with passages that convey the depth of God's love and His abiding presence. It invites us to experience shalom, to rest in Him, and to hear His voice. Continuing the reflection, we find in the Song of Solomon (Song of Songs) a declaration of Jesus as "altogether lovely." Colossians 1:19 emphasizes that in Him, the fullness of God dwells. We may not see Him, but we love Him and experience inexpressible joy and glory through our faith.
In these verses, we witness the overwhelming beauty of Jesus and the completeness found in His presence. This truth invites us to deepen our understanding and relationship with Him.
So how do we apply this to our lives? Below are 8 different ways, consider where you are in your journey with Jesus and choose 1 or 2 that you can incorporate into your coming week.
