Now that we’ve stepped into a new year, it can feel a bit strange to leave all the festivities behind. Maybe life is settling back into its usual routine—or maybe you’re still trying to figure out what your normal looks like now. Regardless, this is still a wonderful moment to pause and remember how God has been at work in and around us. As one saying goes, “We can’t connect the dots looking forward; we can only connect them by looking back,” so this is our chance to notice God’s fingerprints in the year we’ve just left behind.
Reflection has a way of opening our eyes to glimpses of God’s goodness we might’ve missed while in the thick of things. The Bible shows us that King David did this often, taking time to remember how God rescued and guided him through different seasons. In doing so, he found reasons to rejoice, even when life got overwhelming. When we, too, look back with gratitude, we can see more clearly the many ways God supported us, answered prayers, or simply carried us through hard moments.
If you’re not sure where to start, try asking yourself, “Where did I sense God’s kindness this past year?” Maybe He stood with you in a big decision or a tough relationship. Or perhaps there was a simple moment of peace or encouragement that felt like a direct gift from Him. Other times, you might ask, “Where did God feel distant?” We know He never truly leaves us, but sometimes circumstances or our own doubts can crowd Him out. Recognizing both His nearness and the times we felt lost can bring us into a deeper trust, because we see how consistent His presence truly is.
A daily “examen” can help us spot these moments more easily. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just a few quiet minutes asking, “Where did I notice Your presence, Lord? And where did I ignore or miss You?” We’re not trying to condemn ourselves, but to train our hearts to watch for God. This practice can turn reflection into a steady rhythm, making us more aware of His leading in every part of our day.
Don’t forget that everyone’s routine for connecting with God looks different. Some folks enjoy the early quiet hours, reading scripture and praying before the hustle begins. Others find their best moments in the evening, closing the day with a thankful heart. It doesn’t matter so much when or how you pause; the main thing is that you create space to be with Him. Over time, you might realize your everyday habits—like taking a prayer walk or reading a brief verse while sipping your coffee—have become cherished anchors in your faith.
Finally, remember that reflection isn’t a solo activity. Being part of a church family offers a supportive space to share both the highlights and the struggles of the year. It’s not about forming a social club but about growing together as a family, reminding one another of God’s central place in everything we do. By recounting stories of God’s faithfulness to each other, we renew our courage to step into what lies ahead.
So as you settle into this new year, make time to reflect on the last one. Ask God to show you what He was doing, even in the moments you thought He was far away. Look for those small (or big) reminders that He truly is the steady anchor in every storm, and let that truth bolster your faith for the year to come. May your heart be filled with gratitude for the ways God has already led you, and may trust in His ongoing purpose bring fresh hope and steady confidence for all that 2025 holds.
